Abstract

News production and its impact on the construction of journalists' professional identity have been reshaped after the Internet and the wild search for news, as well as the use of professionals without a degree in journalism. Our analysis puts the French concept of journaliste assis – or “sitting journalist” –, face to face with the relations with a paparazzo collaborator, who takes the place of the reporter in the streets, notably the setting of processes, ideologies and sociocultural manifestations. Even not mastering the techniques of what makes one event news, or the criteria of newsworthiness, the paparazzo is an “informal reporter” that becomes the eyes and ears of the newsroom journalist, many times standing out as a gatekeeper in the medium which is our case study. It is up to journalists with a diploma to work back in the office, with few visits to the world outside cyberspace. This paper is a theoretical review on journalism and technological innovations and it focuses on the changes in the production routines, especially after the introduction of mobile devices in the newsrooms and their use by the audience. The paper will cover the mutations faced by journalism, the shaping of journalists' new professional identity and the use of tools that have helped coin the term database journalism. This study is based on the production routine of G1 Paraíba portal – in João Pessoa. This portal is part of Rede Paraíba de Comunicação (Paraíba Communication Network). Part of a wider research – still in its initial phase – on the reshaping of journalism in times of media convergence and integrated news production, this paper sheds light on the distance between professionals who produce online news and the streets. The way the sitting journalist interacts with the sources and the news agencies for the production of online content creates a framework for setting new production routines, where the on-site news checking becomes rare, except for the work developed by paparazzi. In this context, the sitting journalist talks about the “urban texts”, but cannot really read what he writes, since being on the streets is also an enunciation process. It is the city – with its narratives – and the life that runs through its streets that take shape in online journalism. However, the journalists' feet do not touch the dust and the pavement outside newsrooms. Concepts of Newsmaking, Organizational Theory, Gatekeeping Theory and Semiotics of Culture (more especially the term modelling) will be used in this study. This paper also shows changes in the typification of the journalists' professional model: a new objective of the sitting journalist is to feed the “information turbines” in cyberspace.
