Resumo

O artigo propõe refletir sobre os discursos e as práticas de vigilância na contemporaneidade, a partir do cuidado de si proposto pela medicina de doentes potenciais e da experiência convergente entre risco e doença crônica. A maior prevalência das doenças crônicas, as constantes alterações dos limiares saudável/enfermo, com a inclusão das noções de pré-doença e da categoria at risk, associada às novas tecnologias de diagnóstico e de screening, provocam alterações na relação do indivíduo com seu corpo, nos modos de pensar sobre si e na experiência da doença. Ao local ocupado pela medicina e por tais tecnologias, soma-se ainda programas de saúde pública e a mídia, com a proposição do cuidado crônico e dos modos de cuidar de si. Dentro deste cenário, dois casos serão discutidos: (a) a experiência da doença crônica risky - paciente com diabetes tipo 1 experimenta constante vigilância de seu estado de saúde; e (b) a experiência de estar at risk - análise do caso da atriz Angelina Jolie que realiza uma mastectomia preventiva.

 

Abstract

The article aims to inquire into the surveillance discourses and practices in the contemporary culture, into the care of the self proposed by the potential patients medicine and into the converged experience of risk and chronic disease. The major prevalence of chronic diseases, the changes in healthy/sick thresholds, the inclusion of the notions of pre-disease and the category at risk, associated with the new diagnosis and screening technologies, cause changes in the individual's relationship with his body, in the ways they think about themselves and in the experience of the disease. As well as the place occupied by the medicine and by such technologies, adds also the public health programs and the media, with the proposition of chronic care and ways to take care of themselves. Within this context, two cases will be discussed: (a) the experience of risky chronic disease – a patient with type 1 diabetes experience constant surveillance of their health condition; and (b) the experience of being at risk - the analysis of the actress Angelina Jolie case that opted for a prophylatic mastectomy.
